Artemis Addock

Mender and Diviner

Stars, aether, and divination.
A viera with all that and more, Artemis travels the continent to look for the answers that elude his questions.

Backstory

Basic Information

Due to being born with an aetherial condition that leaves him able to take in aether at night, Artemis has always had to see the silver linings in life. Most of his memories from childhood within the frigid city of Ishgard take place in crowded examination rooms and cloisters, none of which left him happy.Little could be said of the cause of his affliction. However, it seemed strange to Artemis that everyone but him were saddened by this conclusion. At some point in his teen years, Artemis simply acknowledged that this was his chance to see a part of the world that few ever get to truly see. He devoted himself to astromancy, one of the few magical talents that he could take on due to his affliction, and became a renowned aetherologist and mender in Coerthas. With his most recent research completed, Artemis has put time aside to travel and share his unique perspective on life, with the occasional hijinks here or there, of course.

Roleplaying Hooks

Venues

Artemis currently works at the Apothcafe. The cafe is...unique, in its own way, and offers its services to a variety of patrons. As its lead bartender, Artemis can be seen mixing a variety of drinks, some of which are his own making, and talking to both his coworkers and customers.

Personal Hooks

Artemis believes himself to be a capable guide for those who are looking to explore what Coerthas has to offer now that the Dragonsong War has come to an end. He can offer tips and suggestions on food, entertainment, and even lodging. If he finds someone interesting enough, he may even offer them a futon by the fireplace in his apartment in exchange for some of their stories.

As a researcher for the Athenaeum Astrologicum, Artemis has come across numerous scholars from a variety of disciplines. If you fancy yourself an academic or find yourself interested in either the research or educational facilities of Ishgard, Artemis is oftentimes only a hare's hop away.

Artemis and the rest of his research team recently completed a hefty research paper on various types of aether therapy available for victims of aetherial ailments. The contents of the paper have caused it to gain traction in several parts of the academic community, both good and bad.

Interests

Thanks to his connections in Sharlayan, Artemis recently indulged in a research binge on cooking styles from various cultures. In his free time, he tries his best to put his own personal spin on a variety of dishes he finds interesting, and loves to offer his culinary creations to the citizens he comes across.

Whenever Artemis has some spare time, he likes to browse the various furniture shops of whatever locale he finds himself in. He's always switching up his decorating style, and is often seen pondering for extended periods of time on a specific item. This, of course, can lead to some annoyance...

Due to his condition, Artemis could only master certain aspects of aether manipulation. With astromancy being both something that comes naturally to him and a school of aether manipulation that requires only a finite amount of aether consumption, it's all he's ever been able to experience. Every now and then, Artemis can be seen reading books on the various schools of magic, or pestering tutors and their pupils for stories and extravagant displays of aptitude.

Out of Character

Guten tag, my name is James! I go by he/him if that matters. I'm 23 and live in the USA working as a high school English teacher. I've been playing FFXIV since just before Stormblood's release. However, I only recently immersed myself in the roleplaying community of the game, so I'm still fairly new to that aspect. If I'm not playing FFXIV, I'm either playing Stardew Valley, League of Legends, or crying my eyes out as I replay Spiritfarer and What Remains of Edith Finch for the 7th time. These are, of course, only a handful of the games I play. If you want to play some games please feel free to add me on discord! I'm always looking for new gaming friends to cause chaos with. My discord is Mightyenaboy if you want to add me there!I also enjoy reading in my free time (yeah yeah, English teacher...) and can offer plenty of book suggestions if you're looking for some!Another thing about me, and probably the most important thing, is that I am heavily into occult history! I have a whole section in my personal library dedicated to the topic! If you ever want to talk about the occult, its history and culture, or anything related to it, I'm your guy.Oh, and another important piece of information. I do not speak German.

Resources

These are some resources that may be helpful if you end up roleplaying with Artemis! I often talk about these things in real life as well, so if you want to get to know me, these are also great resources that can help you understand my ramblings.*

*Please note that my/my character's interests are purely from a historical and explorative standpoint. I wholeheartedly believe that nine times out of ten, modern medicine is better than anything herbalism has to offer. The resource is there simply to help you understand the historical context of various plants and their use in medicines and other applications.
